Ford Motor Company takes environmental sustainability seriously. Environmental sustainability is lived day in and day out and guides a lot of Ford’s corporate philosophy from where we choose to set up our factories to the materials used in our vehicles. This 2014 Ford was recognized by Interbrand as the world’s greenest brand and similarly was recognized as a global leader in business ethics and sustainability by the Ethisphere Institute. Here are a few highlights of the 2013/14 Ford Motor Company Sustainability Report.
Fighting Global Warming: Greenhouse Gases
Ford has strategies and goals in place to completely minimize our carbon footprint. With our new eco friendly strategies, Ford has dropped greenhouse gas emissions from our factories by 9 percent per vehicle since 2011. The variety of alternative fuel and electrified vehicles- hybrids, plug-in hybrids and all-electric vehicles- are playing a big role in our mission. This past year marked the age of the electric vehicle, as sales of electric vehicles almost doubled.
Improving Fuel Economy
Here at Ford we are drivers as well, and we’re always looking for ways to save money at the pump. Through constant electrical system improvements, weight reductions, aerodynamic engineering and transmission development, Ford has been able to make fuel last longer thane ever before. The award winning EcoBoost engine has significantly improved fuel economy while reducing Carbon Dioxide emissions is now available in 90 percent of our vehicles in North America and Europe. Ford’s goals were to produce 1.5 million EcoBoost engines globally by 2013 and have surpassed their estimates, producing half a million more units in the same time frame.
Improving Water Usage
Vehicle manufacturing is impossible without water, and it is used in all stages of vehicle production from the cooling towers to the paint used on the car. That said, using water responsibly is important to us because of the threat of water scarcity to our planet. In 2011, Ford set a goal to reduce water use per vehicle by 30 percent. In 2013, Ford achieved this goal, 2 years before many experts within the company expected!
